When taking a 3D packaging class one of our tasks was creating a brand in a cylindrical form. My way of interpreting this project was I chose to re-brand tennis canisters for the four grand slams. Tennis is one of my greatest passions, so when we got this prompt, I knew it was something that I wanted to take head on. There are a total of four Grand Slams in the tennis world known as the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and US Open. For each of the new designs I wanted to have fun with the designs putting a modern fun twist on each of the wraps to capture the colors you see when you’re at each of the events.
Going through each of the designs for the Australian Open the design’s main elements are inspired by the night scene at Melbourne arena. There was a photo that captured a specific night during the tournament where the sky was purple mixed with this gorgeous blue which is where the gradient I used for this design comes into play. I also wanted to capture the buildings you see at night as well with all of the lights on in different parts of the building to really capture the essence of Australia.
Moving on to Roland Garros; for this design since it’s set in Paris the Eiffel Tower was something I knew I was going to incorporate into it. As for the colors, these are the colors that the tournament is known for, but as for the green there these signs that wrap around the courts that are this dark green that caught my eye when designing this one. When talking about the clay itself is the reason for the splatter surrounding the entirety of the design. I chose to do a splatter design to emulate the effect of when you bounce the ball directly onto the clay from that perspective.
Following Roland Garros would be Wimbledon. For this design it’s similar to the Australian Open design where I was inspired by an image I saw when looking at the stadiums where there was this purple in the sky. Traditionally, Wimbledon is known to be extremely classy with the all white attire which is what they’re known for which is why I thought it would be fun to introduce a lighter toned purple mixed with the white. As for the design of it, based off the Centre Court at the tournament I rebuilt the stadium as the main focus of the canister. Wimbledon is such a classic when it comes to sports so I wanted to keep the grass court stadium as a focus since I made the choice to change the color to the light purple.
For the fourth and final design, the US Open. This was one of the more straight forward designs for me as I decided to go a little bit more patriotic with this one to have the main focus be on the colors we associate with the United States/ As for the gradient, the colors were taken from the colors that you see around the stadium similar to the Roland Garros design. Aside from the colors, for this design the main focus are the trophies in the middle. On the right you have the Women’s US Open trophy, and on the left you have the Men’s US Open trophy.
