Project Overview

One of the projects I was tasked with while I was at Grand Valley State University was one that had us take a well known short story and turn it into book covers. Not only did we have to make book covers for the short story once each variation was done we had to translate it into a movie poster.

For my book covers I chose to design it around the short story that is used in Harry Potter “The Tale of The Three Brothers”. I wanted to pick something that wasn’t anyones first choice, or something that wouldn’t be the first thing on people’s minds which is why I chose a story from within a movie. I approached this concept of when the three brothers crossed the bridge when they first met “death” which I depict in two of the covers with one them being “death” by themselves. My main goal was to not lose the sense of the magical touch that Harry Potter has but also put my own spin on it which can be seen with how I interpreted the scene that was shown in the movie from a different perspective.

When translating the covers into a movie poster I wanted to go take a more darker route to it with making “death” more ominous. I didn’t want to lose the illustrative feel the book covers had, but I also didn’t want it to feel too close to the covers themselves which is why I made sure that death had more of a realistic look with the skeleton under the hood stand out more as if they are trapping the brothers inside it.
